About Climate & Sustainability Africa

Who we are.

An emerging, research-led platform built on a simple conviction: Africa's sustainability challenges will be met through evidence, capable institutions, appropriate finance, locally grounded innovation and practical implementation.

Why we exist

Closing the implementation gap.

There is no shortage of sustainability commitments. The gap lies between commitment and implementation: between a national climate plan and a funded local project, between an ESG policy and a changed lending decision, between environmental data and a better management choice.

Too often, research stays in reports, practice goes undocumented and learning stays theoretical. Climate & Sustainability Africa exists to connect them, so that evidence informs practice, practice generates evidence, and both are shared in ways people can use.

We bring together experience across environmental management, climate resilience, ESG and climate finance, GIS and spatial analysis, sustainability education, youth participation and applied environmental initiatives.

Where our work comes from

Built from the field up.

CSAf grew out of practical work across Zimbabwe: mapping climate risk and water security in Lupane, reclaiming eroded land, restoring mine-degraded landscapes in Filabusi, protecting watersheds in Buhera and supporting fuel-efficient stoves in rural Manicaland. It continues inside the financial sector, where sustainability governance and climate finance decide what gets built.

That combination of field evidence and institutional practice is what we bring to every piece of work.

Our statement

We believe a sustainable Africa will be built on evidence, driven by innovation and sustained by capable people and institutions. Climate & Sustainability Africa exists to connect all three.

Our three pillars

What we stand for.

Everything we do, from a research question to a training session, sits under one of three commitments.

I

Evidence & Insight

Know what works.

Rigorous, applied research, spatial analysis and data that make sustainability decisions better informed, with limitations stated as clearly as findings.

  • Research agenda
  • Insights & publications
  • GIS & environmental data
II

Innovation in Practice

Make it work.

Testing and documenting practical solutions, from fuel-efficient stoves and renewable energy to digital environmental monitoring, and designing projects that can attract finance.

  • Initiatives & case studies
  • Project development
  • Environmental technology
III

Capable People & Institutions

Make it last.

Building the skills, governance and systems that keep sustainability embedded in organisations long after a single project ends.

  • Learn: courses & training
  • Advisory & ESG integration
  • Governance & reporting

There is no sustainable future without innovation.

Not innovation for its own sake, but new tools, models and partnerships that work in African conditions: low-cost environmental monitoring, finance-ready project design, participatory methods and digital learning that reaches people wherever they are.

Our vision

An Africa where climate resilience and sustainable development are built on credible evidence, capable institutions and finance that reaches the places it is needed most.

Our mission

To strengthen sustainability implementation in Africa by generating usable evidence, documenting what works in practice, building practical skills and supporting institutions to act.

Our core values

01

Integrity

Hover to read

We tell the truth about evidence, including its limits, and describe our role exactly as it was.

02

Innovation

Hover to read

We look for better ways of doing things, and test them before we claim them.

03

Inclusion

Hover to read

Communities and young people shape solutions as co-creators, not as beneficiaries.

04

Rigour

Hover to read

Academic discipline in method, and practical value in every output.

05

Stewardship

Hover to read

We build for the long term: ecosystems, institutions and capacity that outlast any single project.

How we work

Seven working principles.

These principles shape how we research, write, teach and advise.

01

Evidence before assertion

We say what the evidence supports, and what it cannot tell us.

02

Systems thinking

Environmental, social, institutional and financial dimensions belong together.

03

Context matters

Local conditions, institutions and lived experience come first.

04

Rigour that is useful

Academic standards in method, practical value in output.

05

Participation, not consultation

Communities and young people as co-creators of solutions.

06

Built to last

Sustainability embedded in institutions, not added on.

07

Honest about limits

We describe our role exactly and publish limitations alongside results.

What makes us different

Four commitments that set us apart.

We connect, not silo

Research, initiatives, learning and advisory inform each other in one platform.

We publish limitations

Our case studies show what worked, what did not and what remains uncertain.

We are grounded in Africa

Our evidence starts from African realities and engages with global practice.

We stay proportional

We claim only what our experience supports.

Work with us.

We collaborate with researchers, institutions, funders, organisations and communities who share our commitment to evidence-led action. Based in Harare, working across Africa.
