Initiatives
Initiatives are the practice evidence behind Climate & Sustainability Africa. Each one is written up as a case study: what the situation was, what was done, what changed and what we learnt, including what the work could not show.
We publish limitations alongside results on purpose. A case study that only reports success teaches very little.
One that is honest about what worked, what did not and what remains uncertain is far more useful to the next team facing a similar problem. Every case study follows the same path, so they can be read and compared easily.
Where the work happened
From the semi-arid west to the eastern highlands, and inside the financial sector in Harare. Select a point to open its case study.
Seven case studies
Each case states our role exactly: whether we led, supported, contributed to or participated in the work. Hover over a case to preview it.
Independent GIS research that identified water-stressed communities and helped improve water access for at least 848 households.
Fuel-efficient stoves that eased pressure on forests and shortened the firewood journeys of women and girls.
Restoring land lost to severe erosion that threatened farming and local livelihoods.
Field research on how land degraded by mining can recover its environmental services and landscape function.
Protecting watersheds and planting trees to reduce erosion, hold water and build resilience to flooding.
Supporting a bank's sustainability certification journey and finance for climate resilience and clean energy.
Solar-powered, connected monitoring for continuous environmental information.
We are open to partnerships that extend, test or scale this work, and to sharing methods with teams facing similar problems.
